Is My AC Leaking Refrigerant?

Much as we would love to tell you that you are not going to have any problems with your air conditioner this year, let alone for countless years to come, that is simply not the case. No air conditioner lasts forever, and no air conditioner operates properly throughout its entire lifespan. You are going to need air conditioning repair in Virginia Beach, VA eventually. When you do, you want to act fast so that your system does not wind up suffering unnecessary damages.

Obviously, there are certain problems that may be more pressing than others. A refrigerant leak just so happens to be one of the most serious problems that your air conditioner may encounter, though. Remember, a lot of air conditioning issues share similar symptoms. What you may think is a relatively minor issue may actually be a symptom of a refrigerant leak, so don’t wind up doing major damage to your system just because you falsely believed that repairs could wait.

First of All, Why the Concern?

If your air conditioner is low on refrigerant then it is not going to function as reliably, efficiently, or effectively as it should. This is not an exaggeration. Any refrigerant-based AC, be it a heat pump, split central unit, or ductless mini split, needs an exact amount of refrigerant if it is to operate properly. A low charge means that it simply can’t.

Heaters generate new heat (except for heat pumps), but air conditioners do not generate “coolness” (including heat pumps). Refrigerant based systems evaporate refrigerant in the indoor coils to remove heat from the air inside, and then they condense that refrigerant outdoors in order to release the heat.

If you have a refrigerant leak, or if your system was not properly charged at the time of installation (obviously not installed by us!), then your system will struggle to remove heat from your home. That is just the beginning of the trouble, though. Other issues include the following.

  • You are not only living less comfortably, but paying more to do so, as your AC has to run harder in order to achieve target temperatures.
  • Your system will suffer a lot of excess wear and tear as it runs and runs or starts to short cycle due to overheating. This increases the risk of damage.
  • Your evaporator coil may ice up as condensation collecting on it freezes. This can insulate the evaporator coil, impeding the cooling process even more.
  • Eventually, your compressor may suffer catastrophic damages. When that happens, you are almost certainly looking at a full system replacement.
